Only make a percentage of the income available for spending.

We work solely from the checking account. We don't use credit cards and rarely use cash. The paycheck gets deposited into checking, and that's how much we have to spend.
In order to save, I take a percentage of the check and put it directly into savings, so seeing less available in checking makes us both think about the true necessity of something before we make the decision to purchase it.
